If this is your first holiday season in the United States, it may seem different from your own holiday traditions. By taking the time to learn a bit more about what to expect, most people are able to have some fun and enjoy themselves as they celebrate the holiday season here in the U.S.
Thanksgiving – This holiday is considered a traditional U.S. holiday. It is a day for friends and family to get together to eat and visit. Common foods served include turkey, sweet potatoes, stuffing, and corn.
Black Friday – This is considered one of the biggest shopping days in the United States and also signifies the start of the holiday shopping season. Experiencing shopping on Black Friday is something everyone needs to do at least once.
Snow – Higher elevations and many states throughout the country experience snow during the winter months in the U.S. You can even find weather predictions indicating what areas of the country can expect a “White Christmas.”
Christmas – The United States is a “melting pot” of different cultures and traditions, often based upon the region of the country where you will celebrate this holiday. Traditions are influenced by German, European, Asian, and Spanish cultures, to name a few, which also influences the types of holiday feasts people enjoy.
Times Square New Year’s Eve – A long-standing tradition for American households is to celebrate New Year’s Eve by visiting Times Square in New York City or watching the event on television.
Don’t be afraid to share your own holiday traditions with your friends! Creating new traditions you share with those closest to you is perfectly acceptable!
