If you’re searching for a career in the tech space, you’ve probably seen web development pop up a time or two. That’s because it’s a growing field that offers job security, growth potential, and variety. But what exactly does a web developer do?

Web Development Defined

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) 1, “Web developers design and create websites. They are responsible for the look of the site. They are also responsible for the site’s technical aspects, such as its performance and capacity, which are measures of a website’s speed and how much traffic the site can handle.”

As a web developer, you can expect to take on the following duties:

  1. Write clean code according to best practices and standards
  2. Create unit and integration tests to ensure your modules (common website components like images, text, and buttons) work properly both individually and together
  3. Maintain technical documentation for the project/module you’re developing
  4. Participate in team meetings, discussions, and code reviews
  5. Perform version control procedures and deployment

Aren’t familiar with these concepts? No worries. While you’re exploring your career options, it is more important to ensure your personality is a good fit for the field – the technical expertise can come later. If you’ve mastered the following soft skills, you’ll likely be a good web development candidate.  

  • Communication: Web developers frequently work in teams and interact with clients, so you must be able to effectively share project updates, receive/provide feedback, and collaborate with your peers.
  • Flexibility: As a web developer, you will need to learn multiple programming languages, and be able to pivot on a dime. Further, the industry is constantly changing and adapting to emerging technologies, so you must commit to doing the same.
  • Detail-oriented: The ability to pay attention to small particulars – in a time sensitive manner – will serve you well as a web developer.

While many bootcamps and programs require basic coding knowledge to enroll, others do not.
