With Computer Systems Institute’s new hybrid programs, F1 international students can now enjoy the convenience and flexibility of studying from anywhere.

Going back to school can be a big step for anyone. Between work and family commitments, adding college courses to a busy life can be difficult. If you’re a non-resident in the US, you may have learned that sometimes even finding a program near where you are staying or living can be hard. All of that is changing starting January 6, 2025, with Computer System Institute’s (CSI) new hybrid program.

CSI’s CEO, Julia Lowder, says that the hybrid model has been in development for a few years, “With COVID we realized the convenience factor serves our students. We realized that in terms of our academic programs and tech capabilities, we were easily able to move online.”

She continues, “We saw what was happening in higher ed and how hybrid has grown for international students. This opens opportunities up to people from so many geographic regions and allows them to attend a type of institution that might not be available where they live”

How the Hybrid Programs Work

CSI’s 12-month program works by combining on-campus with online synchronous or “live” classes with asynchronous models for self-paced study. There are several models available to students. With all options, students are required to attend on-campus residencies ensuring that the benefit of building learning communities is coupled with web-based work. CSI operates 6 campuses in the Chicago or Boston area.

To participate, you just need access to a computer, a webcam, and internet connectivity. More information is available online.

CSI has taken many steps to ensure that the quality of education students get with the hybrid program compares to the in-person option. “We have brought on experts who have expertise in creating hybrid programs. The methodology will be the same but more online friendly,” says Lowder.

“To ensure students stay on track and don’t fall behind, we’ve implemented systems to remind them of their tasks and deadlines. Our student services staff will be there every step of the way to support them, helping to keep them focused and providing everything they need to succeed.”

According to Andrew Lawrence, Director of Curriculum and Instruction, “We understand the challenges faced by international students and are dedicated to providing them with the resources and support they need to thrive.”

Who is CSI’s Hybrid Program for?

The program offers a flexible and academically rigorous solution tailored to diverse learners. For F1 international students, convenience is a crucial factor that enhances their ability to succeed academically. Adjusting to a new country involves managing cultural transitions, language barriers, and personal responsibilities alongside their studies. A hybrid learning format provides the flexibility they need to balance these challenges effectively, allowing them to focus on their education while adapting to their new environment. This makes it an excellent choice for international students seeking a supportive and adaptable way to pursue their academic goals. It also caters to working professionals who want to learn new skills, parents who can’t sacrifice a lot of time away from children, or just people who have busy lives and prefer the freedom of learning from anywhere.

The geographic factor is one of the biggest benefits of the hybrid program. It can be difficult and expensive for international students to pack up and move closer to a college or university. It’s even harder for someone who has already established a life or has a job where they currently live. CSI’s hybrid program is one of the only certificate programs of this type in the US for international students, so options are limited.

As part of the program, students are required to do on-campus residencies. This is what makes the program “hybrid.” Due to laws in the US, international students cannot participate in programs that are fully online. CSI created the hybrid program to comply with this law. It combines the convenience of online learning while still following the rules that are currently in place. It’s also a great way to meet classmates and instructors in person in order to make valuable connections.

Lowder says that the program could be a good fit for F1 students who are working on building confidence, “This could be a benefit to students who may have trouble advocating for themselves or being vocal in the classrooms in person. It opens up a whole new world to someone who might be shy or more introverted.”

CSI’s certificate programs are very affordable when compared to a traditional college or university. The hybrid program costs the same as the in-person program, adding to its appeal to people who want and need flexibility. Since the program only takes a year to complete, students can see a return on their investment soon after graduating and entering the workforce.

Real-World Job Training for International Students

The hybrid program gives students the opportunity to get hands-on learning through Curricular Practical Training (CPT) or Optional Practical Training (OPT). Even students who live in another part of the US may be able to partner with a local business in order to gain practical experience in their field.

Lawrence says that the CPT and OPT options help to round out the education that students receive, “These hybrid programs are more than just a new way to learn; they are a comprehensive educational experience designed to support our students’ academic and professional goals.”

CPT is an off-campus work authorization program that is built into studies. Students will work at the same time they are enrolled in classes. The requirements for when students can participate in CPT differ depending on where they live.

OPT is another way to gain valuable work experience after a student has completed their academic program. It allows eligible students to work for up to one year in their field of study.

There are some rules as to who qualifies for the Curricular Practical Training or Optional Practical Training. “CSI staff are available to assist prospective students in determining their eligibility and finding the program that best fits their academic and professional goals,” says Lowder.

What can I study as an F1 international student?

As of this writing, CSI is offering two hybrid concentrations within its Business Career Program. Prospective students can choose between marketing and organizational administration. As the program grows, more concentrations will be added.

Lowder says “During COVID we learned a lot of lessons and what works well. We’ve figured out how to keep students engaged. It’s still a learning process but we have the confidence that it will do well.”

She continues, “Our admissions team can work with students who want to transfer from another school or come from abroad. We can help them meet their needs, whether they want to just study or study and work.”

“We are excited to offer these new programs as part of our broader mission to create an inclusive, supportive learning environment for all students,” added Lawrence. “Our goal is to prepare students not just for academic success, but for a successful transition into their professional lives.”

The hybrid program starts on January 6, 2025, and CSI is taking applications now. Anyone who has questions or wants to learn more is encouraged to reach out to admissions at 1-847-967-5030 or email admissions@csinow.edu. They can also fill out the information form located on this page.
